In 1981, local radio station employees became aware of a large number of children missing school in the winter because they did not have warm coats. That November, Coats for Kids – Cleveland was founded when the radio station began soliciting donations of new or like-new winter coats.
That first campaign filled the studio, and subsequent campaigns brought in even more coats, along with monetary donations used to purchase new coats. Since then, millions of dollars have been raised and hundreds of thousands of new and like-new coats have been distributed to children in need in northeast Ohio.
Coats for Kids conducts an annual collection campaign of new and like-new winter coats in all sizes – infant to adult. Each year, from November thru early January, collection bins are in place at area malls, other local businesses accept coat donations, and area organizations conduct coat collection campaigns.
The need to keep area children warm, however, is still great. Coat and monetary donations are always needed, and without your ongoing support, Coats for Kids would not exist.
Matt Patrick loved to make people laugh with his unique and entertaining way with words. He had a very special ability to reach people in a deeply personal way, especially after being diagnosed with Stage IV mucosal melanoma on September 11, 2015, when he decided to openly share details of his fight against cancer publicly at every step of the way. True to his indomitable spirit, Matt Patrick mustered the strength to broadcast to his beloved audience one last time to say goodbye less than a week before his passing.
The Matt Patrick Memorial Foundation was established in 2018 by his best friend and widow, Paula, as a tribute to the memory of Michael “Matt Patrick” Ryan. The Radiomattrick #SandboxStrong Award is presented annually to an individual or family experiencing challenges associated with cancer resulting in the loss of a loved one, while bravely exemplifying the tenets in life that Matt Patrick passionately supported, believed in, and demonstrated in his own life: Faith, Family, Humility, Speaking Without Fear, Tenacity, Hard Work, Living Passionately, and Service To Others.
